Coming to Your Joy Honestly
We live in a society where we’re taught to ‘keep a stiff upper lip’, and to ‘not let them see you sweat’. We believe that negative emotions are bad, and a sign of weakness. And expressing them leads to rejection or loss.
Instead of embracing these feelings to move through them, we’ve been taught to avoid the darkness – to drown these feelings out with superficial motivational mantras like “fake it ‘til you make it”, “put up and shut up”, and my personal fav “when the going gets tough, the tough get going”.
As a result, we have become less connected to what’s really going on inside. We don’t even know what connected feels like anymore. And because we are so used to comparing ourselves to others, we look for those who ‘have it all together’. Unfortunately, most people are disconnected too – they’re also ‘keeping up appearances’.
In short, we’ve become a society of fakers and hiders. We’ve gotten so good at faking it, we even fool ourselves….I know I did.
